When a couple or family comes to
counselling the focus is on the patterns of behaviour, beliefs or
stories that have developed in the couple or family system as well as
the wider context in which those attending live. The aim is to
understand the dynamics of the couple or family system and to
introduce new ideas, and facilitate different ways of being together
that helps family members tackle and overcome the particular
difficulties they are experiencing. With this approach all those
involved with the ‘problem’ are encouraged to attend therapy.
Young children, less able to use words, are involved in the process
through creative means.
